Arrival in the afternoon at your wonderful accommodation, the Santa Cristina Castle. This 17th century castle sets in the green and quite countryside just north of Rome, at the border with Tuscany. You will be welcomed by the owner and the staff for a drink and a guided tour of the castle before enjoying a delicious dinner.
After breakfast, the ride starts heading to Bolsena Lake, the largest volcanic lake in Europe. We will ride on an ancient track across farmland and chestnut woods, and across the mediaeval village of Gradoli. While descending to the lake, we will enjoy breathtaking views of the lake’s surroundings and its two islands. An enjoyable canter on the beach and across a small ford will bring us to our destination for lunch, a typical trattoria on the beach. Here we will enjoy a delicious meal cooked by Antonietta and go for a swim in the lake (depending on the season) before back in the saddle. On the way back, we will ride in a countryside scattered with many Etruscan ruins and tombs. We will in fact pass through the necropolis of Pianezze, one of the ancient Etruscan settlements in the area. A shepherds’ trail in the wood will bring us back to the castle in the late afternoon, just in time to rest before a nice dinner at the farmhouse tavern.
Today’s destination is the Mezzano Lake, a small volcanic crater formed 400,000 years ago and now filled with water. The ride stars in the beautiful countryside and woods surrounding Onano. Here there are great opportunities for canter on the natural passage between oak trees before reaching the top of a plateau from which you get spectacular views of the area. We then ride across farms and woodlands down to the marshlands and vineyards around the Mezzano Lake. Our stop for lunch is a restaurant in a small farm overlooking the lake. You will enjoy a fantastic meal and some rest while the horses graze in a paddock. The lake is in a beautiful natural area, part of the Selva del Lamone Regional Park and important site for many bird species. During the warmer months, you can swim in the lake which has crystal clear waters. In the afternoon, we ride back to the castle following the Brigands trail and enjoying few historical sights on the way. A hearty dinner at the farmhouse tavern will be the perfect end of the day.
Our destination for today is the ancient village of Sorano. The trail brings us on the woody hills around the castle and then on more open grounds from which you will get scenic views over the Tuscan mountains on the background. The place is also ideal to enjoy some trot and canter. The lunch break will be top of the hill, at the ruins of the Vitozza castle. This was an historical and important settlement from the 11th century A.D. where the powerful Aldobrandeschi family built two castles. A pleasant picnic will be served with table and chairs and there will be a chance to visit the ruins. After lunch, the trail will continue towards Sorano. Here you will stay overnight in an exclusive accommodation inside the fortress of Sorano. while the horses will be hosted in a farm few Km away from the village. The fortress is a stunning position on the side of a big gorge created by the river Lente and overlooking Sorano. Dinner will be served in the restaurant next to the fortress.
From Sorano, we will start the ride descending down the gorge into the valley of the river Lente and getting marvelous views on the mountains of Amiata and Cetona. The lunch break will consist in a picnic near the fortified village of Castellottieri. The rides continues in the afternoon with a stunning view over cultivated fields and pastures and finally reaches the Proceno Castle, your next accommodation. This is a stunning 11th century Castle at the center of the Proceno village, once stronghold of the Pope strategically overlooking the ancient Via Cassia, the old roman road. You will be welcomed by the warm hospitality of countess Pucci Cecchini and her husband Giovanni, and stay in one of the many apartments inside the castle. A traditional visit to the medieval tower of the castle with its stunning view will make this stay truly unforgettable! Dinner will be at the castle restaurant, enjoying fresh and local ingredients.
The tour has sadly reached its end. A healthy breakfast at the castle and check out before departure.
